Crossing Customs

Did you know that most people will switch careers at least seven different times over the course of their lives? If you find yourself wishing for a career change, it might be time to think about relocating over the border. Despite the headlines, there are still plenty of opportunities for hard working individuals both north and south of the 49th parallel. However, you have to be prepared for some major cultural differences before you head in either direction.

A common misconception amongst both Canadians and Americans is that we are basically the same in our outlooks. The differences are subtle, but they are still there. So as you consider that job offer that came through the Toronto executive recruiting firm you have been using to find work, keep some of these cultural differences and practices in mind:

Not a lot of public options! The number one thing that Canadians tend to forget about America is that there are very few quality public options in areas we tend to take for granted. You might be eyeing a nice piece of Arlington real estate for retirement, but you need to keep in mind that you will have to foot your own medical bills, entirely. That kind of budget concern can make a big difference in what you can really afford.

Entitlement: The American dream is largely one based on attitude about one's self, whereas Canadians tend to shape their identity around government. That means, if you are in business, you can't expect a lot of forgiveness should you get into trouble. Don't assume that all commercial mortgage lenders work the same; take time to find out how these different outlooks impact financial policies and interest rates.

Sports: You are probably already aware of this, but the United States enjoys an athletic landscape that is entirely different from Canada. If you are a dyed in the wool Canadian, you probably love attending a girl hockey tournament to see your daughter play, and catch the highlights every night. Don't expect these options to be available in every American town; it's a land where hockey is fairly low on the popularity charts!

Greater community involvement: Although community activity may not revolve around the local hockey rink, it is a fact that America tends to have more community activities, and more popular ones, than Canada. Most towns have an annual fair close by at the county or state level; tailgate parties are traditions at local high school football games. If you are a Canadian craving community, the US might be just the right place for you!

Local divisions: Here in Canada, we have three levels of government. The States includes a county level which does not usually come into play, but may affect some areas of your life as far as bylaws. It's important to check out county regulations on many different issues as well as municipal and state law.

So, before you sell your Waterclub Toronto condo and head south, make sure to consider the many differences in culture and practices that exist between Canada and the United States. They might not be deal breakers, but they are definitely there!
